Trauma-Informed Care in the Correctional Setting

This training explores principles of Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) and how these can be implemented in the correctional setting while honoring and upholding legal requirements and goals of corrections. The training seeks to increase collaboration with corrections staff and clinical staff to influence trauma-informed policies and procedures in facilities overall.
The learning objectives are to define trauma-informed care; identify the core principles and practices that constitute a trauma-informed approach; apply knowledge of various types of trauma and the impact of trauma to practice; explain the social-ecological model of trauma; compare differing experiences of trauma within gender and ethnic identities specific to inmate populations and utilize understanding to guide practice; describe challenges to the provision of trauma-informed care specific to correctional environments; assess clinical practice and apply trauma-informed care to clinical practice within the correctional setting; implement trauma screening and assessment; design interventions from a strengths-based perspective to increase resilience and decrease incidences of re-traumatization; select appropriate interventions for trauma diagnoses including co-occurring disorders; evaluate correctional facility policy from a trauma-informed lens; prepare trainings for correctional staff to implement changes to policies and procedures to create a trauma-informed approach.
